CMD is an often-undiagnosed root cause of persistent chest pain in many INOCA patients. The prevalence is greater than realized: up to 45% of patients presenting with non-obstructive CAD have been shown to have CMD. INOCA is not merely symptomatic, it carries a risk of major adverse cardiac events (MACE) including cardiac death, non-fatal myocardial infarction, hospitalization due to unstable angina or revascularization.
