Biographical Sketch:
Dr. Spears is the Director of the Cardiovascular Research Lab at Beaumont Hospital-Dearborn (BH-D) and Associate Director of the Cath Lab and Cardiology Fellowship Program at BH-D. He remained in academics after his last year in medical school (SUNY Downstate NY) doing hypoxia research (Senior Research Award), two years at the CVRI UCSF (JA Clements MD, surfactant research/Lasker Award), and a year at USC/NASA-JPL (image processing). Clinical training included Residencies/Fellowships at NY Cornell, Lenox Hill Hosp, and the Cleveland Clinic. Faculty appointments included Harvard Medical School (Assist Prof Med and Radiol) and WSU (tenured Prof Med). With numerous NIH/RO1 and industry grants, he pioneered new methods in coronary densitometry/QCA, coronary angioscopy, lasers (photodynamic therapy, LBA), and drug coated balloons (heparin). He discovered Aqueous Oxygen after a ten-year search and Co-founded Therox, Inc (1994). The basic and preclinical studies by Spears and coworkers formed the basis for local AO/SSO2 for STEMI.
