The medical-legal doctrines of "standard of care" and "informed consent" are foundational to understanding and avoiding malpractice liability. Although the two doctrines should be simple concepts, there is widespread misunderstanding as to when they apply and what they require. This misunderstanding frequently compromises patient care and increases liability. This session will begin by defining and developing these two doctrines. It will then give the doctrines practical application by discussing how procedure-related complications can be managed in a manner that is both medically and legally sound.
